If you are a salaried employee in Pakistan, there is a good chance you are already paying income tax through monthly deductions — and still not appearing on FBR’s list of active filers. Those are two different things, and the gap costs money.
Being a filer affects withholding tax rates on banking transactions, vehicle registration, property and more. Filing your return is not optional admin work; it is the difference between the normal rate and the higher rate on several transactions you will make anyway.
This guide explains how to file through IRIS, FBR’s online portal, without assuming any accounting background.
What Is IRIS?
IRIS is the Federal Board of Revenue’s online portal where income tax returns are filed. It runs at iris.fbr.gov.pk. Everything — registration, return filing, wealth statement, notices — happens inside this system.
Step 1: Register, or Get Enrolled
There are two different situations:
- First-time filer: You need to register with FBR before you can file anything. Registration gives you a National Tax Number (NTN) and login credentials.
- Already registered but no login: If you have an NTN or registration number but no IRIS credentials, use the ‘E-enrolment for Registered Person’ option on the IRIS login page to obtain access.
Many people are surprised to find they already have an NTN — for example, from an old employment record — but have never activated IRIS access. Check before creating a duplicate registration.
Step 2: Log Into IRIS
Once you have credentials, log in at iris.fbr.gov.pk. FBR publishes video tutorials for return filing, which are genuinely useful if you have never seen the interface — the return form has several tabs and it helps to watch someone move through it once.
Step 3: Complete Your Income Tax Return
Inside IRIS you will fill in:
- Personal and employment details
- Salary income — as per your salary certificate or the figures your employer has reported
- Tax already deducted at source by your employer
- Other income, if any (bank profit, rental income, freelance earnings)
- Tax payments and adjustments
Salaried individuals with a single employer and standard deductions have the simplest return. The complexity rises sharply if you have multiple income sources, foreign remittances, or capital gains — in those cases a tax practitioner earns their fee.
Step 4: File the Wealth Statement
Where applicable, the wealth statement is filed alongside the return. It reconciles your assets and liabilities for the year. Do not skip it if the system asks for it — an incomplete filing can be treated as a defective return.
Step 5: Submit and Save the Acknowledgement
Once submitted, save the acknowledgement. This is your proof of filing and the document you will produce when a bank, dealer or authority asks whether you are a filer. Keep a digital copy, not just a printout.
Deadlines and Extensions
FBR announces the filing deadline for each tax year, and extensions are granted by circular when announced. Because these dates change from year to year, check the current deadline on the FBR website rather than relying on last year’s date. Filing after the deadline may attract a penalty, and there is a separate process for filing a revised return if you make a mistake later.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing salary deduction with filing. Your employer deducting tax does not make you a filer.
- Creating a second NTN. If you already have one, use e-enrolment instead.
- Leaving the wealth statement blank. It is part of the filing, not a bonus field.
- Mismatched salary figures. Your declared salary should match the salary certificate issued by your employer.
- Losing the acknowledgement. Without it, proving your filer status later becomes a headache.
- Waiting for the last week. The portal slows down dramatically near deadlines.
